Located to the north-east of the Arequipa region at about 3 600 m a.s.l., very close to the Ampato and Sabancaya volcanoes, is the Colca Canyon, considered one of the deepest in the world, reaching approximately 4,160 meters depth. With an Andean vegetation privileged by its climate, this impressive valley belongs to the province of Caylloma. From the Mirador de la Cruz del Cóndor, visitors can enjoy the flight of this majestic bird in danger of extinction that inhabits the canyon. Its varied fauna will make the traveler can also enjoy the presence of animals such as alpaca, vicuña, vizcachas, foxes, cougars, eagles, hawks, owls, among others.

 

In addition, the biodiversity of Arequipa is so extensive that it allows us to see the field poppy, the ichu, the tolar, the yareta, the quiñoa and other herbs. In the Colca Canyon Tour, tourists will have the opportunity to practice extreme sports such as canoeing, mountaineering, mountain climbing, fishing, trekking, among others. This canyon belongs to the Colca Valley, a large agricultural site that has viewpoints to enjoy the landscape and still maintains its ancestral customs for the Collaguas people, former inhabitants of the area.

Day 01: Colca Canyon

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Colca Canyon

Pick up from the passengers of their respective hotels between 03:00 a.m. to 3:30 a.m., after a few minutes we start our trip to the town of Chivay, where we will have our breakfast and then we will continue to the "Cruz del Cóndor", in this place we will enjoy of the fabulous flight of the Condors, for a time of one hour. Then we will continue the trip to the town of Cabanaconde at 10:00 am. approximately, we started our journey over 3280 m.a.s.l. after three and a half hours of walking we will arrive at San Juan de Chuccho 2,300 m.a.s.l, descending 1000 meters approx. we will visit the surroundings of the place. After lunch we will continue the hike for 1 hour and a half, until we reach Cosñirhua (2,660 masl), here we will rest, to continue the walk, until we reach the Oasis de Sangalle located (1,160 masl) where we will enjoy our free time and we will bathe in a cool 20ºC pool. After a restful break we will have dinner and spend the night in bungalows.



Day 2:Colca Canyon Tour

We get up at 05:00 in the morning, previously coordinated with the guide, we will start the trek up to the village of Cabanaconde 3 hours approx, breakfast in Cabanaconde. Then we go to the district of Chivay, the most important town along the Colca Valley and from there we will go to the thermal medicinal baths of La Calera with 38ºC where we will enjoy its relaxing thermal waters.

From an estimated time we will return to Chivay. Lunch at the time previously coordinated with the group for a few minutes rest return to the city of Arequipa, on the way we will have the opportunity to visit the viewpoint of the Andes (4910 masl), later We will arrive to the city of Arequipa at 05.30 p.m. This is how we will end our services and a fascinating adventure.

Bring with you:

  • Passport and migration card (TAM)
  • Light backpack
  • 1.5 to 2 liters of water for the first day (if you need more, you can buy in small cities, BUT it is expensive)
  • Sunblock (very important)
  • Hat, Sunglasses
  • Trekking shoes or boots
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Coats, shirt or warm sweater (IMPORTANT) - The temperature can reach -10 ̊ C.
  • Shorts or pants for walking
  • Swimwear, sandals, towel - pools in the oasis, and thermal baths in Chivay on the way back to Arequipa!
  • Flashlights / Headlights - The walk to get out of the canyon starts at 5am before dawn (It's dark!)
  • Basics like toilet paper, etc.
  • Snacks (Breakfast on the last day is after the walk to leave the Canyon - bring enough snacks to go up!)
